Black Rooster Kapelye 
Black Rooster Kapelye brings to life Jewish and Latvian folk music collected by Emilis Melngailis at the turn of the 20th century. In December 2024, they released their debut album, Vos Mir Zaynen ("Who We Are"), on Lauska Records. The album features a mix of Latvian, Latgalian, Lithuanian, and Yiddish lyrics, exploring themes of identity and belonging, with a diverse range of instruments including violin, accordion, Latvian zither, bagpipes and electric guitar alongside rapturous polyphonic vocals. Blending deep archival work with contemporary sounds, Black Rooster Kapelye connects the past and present, navigating centuries of shared experience and understanding through music.

Cherry Bandora 
Cherry Bandora is an oriental Jewish princess. This urban underground bellydancer found her golden band playing the squares and markets of Berlin, reviving 50’ and 60’ mediterranean classics with surf rock influences. While some of the songs are about drinking, hashish-smokin or simply about living the life of an outlaw, most of them tell the universal story of the desperate love of the broken-hearted, sang in poetic Greek, rhythmical Turkish and Hebrew slang. The fresh combination of the greek blues guitar, the bouzouki, with the psychedelic hammond organ, accompanied by lively middle eastern grooves on drums creates an exciting clash of tradition and rebellious attitude. On top of this cream the bitter-sweet voice of Cherry is flying lik an ornamented arrow that pierces through every beating heart in the crowd

Black Rooster Kapelye
Black Rooster Kapelye erweckt jüdische und lettische Volkslieder zum Leben, die um die Jahrhundertwende vom Komponisten Emilis Melngailis gesammelt wurden. Im Dezember 2024 erschien ihr Debütalbum Vos Mir Zaynen („Wer wir sind“) bei Lauska Records.
Mit Texten in Lettisch, Latgalisch, Litauisch und Jiddisch thematisiert das Album Identität und Zugehörigkeit – musikalisch umgesetzt mit Geige, Akkordeon, lettischer Zither, Dudelsack, E-Gitarre und mitreißendem, mehrstimmigem Gesang.
Durch die Verbindung tiefgehender Archivarbeit mit modernen Klängen schlägt die Band eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart und durchwandert musikalisch Jahrhunderte geteilter Erfahrungen.

Cherry Bandora
Cherry Bandora ist eine orientalisch-jüdische Prinzessin mit rebellischer Seele. Die urbane Underground-Bauchtänzerin fand ihre goldene Band auf den Straßen und Märkten Berlins – mit einem Sound, der mediterrane Klassiker der 1950er und 60er Jahre mit Surfrock-Einflüssen neu interpretiert.
Zwischen Songs über Alkohol, Haschisch oder das wilde Leben als Außenseiterin erzählen ihre Lieder vor allem von gebrochenen Herzen und verzweifelter Liebe – poetisch gesungen auf Griechisch, rhythmischem Türkisch und hebräischem Slang.
Ihr unverkennbarer Stil entsteht durch eine explosive Mischung aus griechischer Blues-Gitarre, Bouzouki und psychedelischer Hammond-Orgel – getragen von energiegeladenen Grooves aus dem Nahen Osten. Darüber schwebt ihre bittersüße Stimme wie ein ornamentierter Pfeil, der direkt ins Herz trifft.

Shtetl Berlin - Berlin’s grassroots festival of Yiddish music, art and culture presents its biggest, most yiddishest festival yet. Rooted in sweaty jam sessions, long jokes and an ever-evolving group of rootless cosmopolitans who really care about art, life, community and the beautfy of a really good song, this festival is a heartfelt tribute to the rich heritage of Jewish Eastern Europe; a forward-looking gathering to share, study and present progressive Yiddish culture; and a celebration of Berlin’s diverse community and its historical ties to Yiddishkayt. This year, we’re thrilled to expand our offerings to include

• three full concert evenings June 12, 14 & 15
• A festival-closing dance ball June 15
• A secular comunity-focused free Sabbath gathering June 13
• multiple official jam session
• a theatrical premiere 
• a brand new lecture series, 
• special Saturday sessions for kids ages 3-8 and 8-12
• and 2 full days of workshops in klezmer music, Yiddish songs, and dance.

As not everyone can attend all 6 days of events, we offer a variety of ticketing packages. Each has three price levels: standard, discount, and supporter. Please choose the one that best suits your needs and abilities, no questions asked.

Das Shtetl Berlin Festival – 10. bis 15. Juni 2025
Shtetl Berlin – das unabhängige Festival für jiddische Musik, Kunst und Kultur – präsentiert seine bislang größte und jiddischste Ausgabe. Entstanden aus schweißtreibenden Jamsessions, langen Witzen und einer immer weiterwachsenden Gruppe weltbürgerlicher Künstler*innen, denen Kunst, Leben, Gemeinschaft und das Glück eines richtig guten Liedes am Herzen liegen, ist dieses Festival eine liebevolle Hommage an das reiche jüdisch-osteuropäische Kulturerbe.

Gleichzeitig ist es ein zukunftsgerichtetes Treffen zur Vermittlung, Weiterentwicklung und Präsentation progressiver jiddischer Kultur – und ein Fest für Berlins vielfältige Community und deren historische Verbindung zur Yiddishkayt.

In diesem Jahr freuen wir uns, unser Programm um folgende Highlights zu erweitern:
