TEH brings together independent European cultural centers who are looking to begin a regular exchange with one another. They are connected by their program: Trans Europe Halles centers offer space for artistic production and creativity, cultural productions, practice, and social interaction. Since 1984, ufaFabrik has been intensively involved in the active development of the network, and in this context, carried out several international conferences. The Art of Crossing Borders - Culture and Sustainability
In 2004, delegates from over forty cultural centers gathered at ufaFabrik Berlin for the 58th Trans Europe Halles General Meeting. At this conference, the delegates first introduced the theme, "Culture Meets Sustainability". They received information about creative approaches, funding, and sponsorship concepts and also visited cultural places in Berlin, and met with participants of the "Berlin Conference for European Cultural Policy - A Soul for Europe” which was taking place at the same time.
Creative Strategies for Sustainability
In 2012 and 2013, two forums were held to develop sustainable strategies for cultural workers, artists, and arts organizations. The various aspects of sustainability were deepened and practical experience was gained. Participants developed scenarios for implementing sustainable projects in their daily work back home. Background: New life in old factories
Washing machine factories, stores, market halls, dairies, slaughterhouses, barracks - the most exciting Trans Europe Halles initiatives have taken place in empty commercial or industrial buildings. They were converted from private properties into vibrant cultural centers, for creativity, culture and artistic experiments.
While this development came to a climax in the last decades of the 20th century in the countries of Western Europe, it is just now gaining momentum in eastern and southern Europe. While the associated network of TEH projects are different, they share a common interest in promoting and implementing new, cross-border projects for young artists and talents. Cultural, local and social aspects are reflected in the programs and structure of the projects, which take place within the context of international development.
